THE MAKING OF A VERY MODERN GENERAL : HOW TO WEAR A COSTUME WITH STYLE

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY! MANY OF YOU have often mentioned Cushing's wonderful ability to ware costumes, like they were his every day wear and wear them SO WELL! The role of General von Spielsdorf in Roy Ward Baker's 'The Vampire Lovers' for Hammer in 1970, gave Cushing the opportunity to play another Vampire Hunter, but unlike his Van Helsing, here Cushing notonly plays the role, he also actually WEARS it! Silk dressing gown, general unforms, high collars and hunting cloaks, few actors wore a costume like Cushing in Hammer movie. Indeed, Christopher Lee looked every inch the Count in his cloaks, but look at both actors in Amicus productions, 'I, Monster'.... Here are few rare colour images of Peter looking his best. Without saying a line, as soon as he appeared on the screen in this movie, you knew Ingrid Pitt's Carmilla had met her match . . in supernaturally and style . . .

PETER CUSHING WAS ONE of those very lucky actors, who could wear a Victorian horses nose-fed bag, and still look very much fitting into the period and quite amazing! This uniform so suits him, and unlike the Tarkin 'slipper-episode' these boots fit him, like a glove

PETER CUSHING and actress Pippa Steel. Pippa would also go on to appear in Hammer films, 'Lust For A Vampire' in 1971. A film that Cushing was also set to appear in. Sadly Helen Cushing's health and passing, prevented him from appearing, and Ralph Bates played a re-written version of the role of Giles Barton . .

A DRAMATIC SHOT in colour transparency of Peter Cushing as General von Spielsdorf on set at Elstree film studios, then called Associated British Picture Studios . .the studio photographer probably spotted Peter, waiting during blocking of a shot, and slipped in to take this shot. It's an amazing pic!

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: HOW COOL IS THAT??

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY! ANOTHER PCAS FB MILESTONE 🙂 . . .. Less than a month ago, we were marking our last #facebook #milestone..now here we are, and you've done it again!

AS EVER, I want to thank you for making your #PeterCushing #facebook page such a success. It does prove that every comment, like and share, DOES make all difference. It's very good to hear and see Peter Cushing mentioned almost every day in mainstream media, on tv, print media and the net. Let's all continue to do our bit, and keep him there 😉 Someone asked me on the weekend, do you ever run dry on things to post, to write? When I first thought about the possibility of bringing #PCAS to Facebook and a website domain back in 2010, it did cross my mind, that 'running dry' maybe a possibility . . . well, I am still waiting... 🙂 Again, MANY thanks. Onwards . . .. ! - Marcus

WE ARE ALWAYS #HAPPY to see you and hear from you, you are ALWAYS #WELCOME . ..  wherever you are!

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: DRACULA MINI SERIES FANCY DRESS AND TWO GREAT DIGITS!

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: I HAVE NEVER seen photographs of Peter Cushing judging a beauty competition, but he must have judged a few #FANCYDRESS comps in his time. This is a one that took place during the opening of #THREBRIDESOFDRACULA back in 1960. It's strange how the act of offering someone a cigarette just looks so alien these days....!

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY?: So, the guys behind the successful BBC Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock series, are planning a whole series of gothic horrors, including DRACULA... It will be made by the BBC and syndicated to the US and others for sure. If you liked their spin on Sherlock...will you watch this? Good idea?

THE PRESS RELEASE . .
THE SHERLOCK TEAM are reuniting on a new version of the classic horror story Dracula, RadioTimes can confirm. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are due to begin work on a series of BBC specials based on the classic 1897 novel by Bram Stoker in which the bloodthirsty count moves from Transylvania to England. The Corporation is finalising talks with the pair and is poised to green-light the project which is likely to air in 2019. The new Dracula series has not yet been written and Gatiss and Moffat will begin working on the scripts once they have both completed their own solo projects – details of which have not been confirmed.“It’s early days and the BBC has not seen a script yet but they are close to signing a deal for a series of 90-minute films of Dracula,” said a senior production source.“It’s not yet been decided if it will be historical or modern day or if there will be a US co-producer but the BBC are keen on this and it will happen.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE decided is how many episodes – whether there are three or five or six or whatever but they will definitely be 90-minute films. "Production is at least a year away so it will probably be on screen in 2019 at the earliest.” Gatiss has often spoken of his fondness for the Dracula story – particularly the 1958 film starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing – and even played the title role himself in a recent audio drama, but it currently seems unlikely that he will take on the part of the Count in the new version, according to sources. “Casting is a long way off but the feeling is he probably won’t – but you never know,” said a BBC source.

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: NO NEED TO CAPTION  THIS ONE THEN?

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: TOGS THREADS AND DUDS : SHARP DRESSER AND NO SCHMATTA

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: Look around you. Today, it's all too easy to slip on a tee-shirt and a pair of joggers and go to the store. Just the other day, sitting on a train, the majority of my fellow passengers looked like they didn't have a mirror in their home! Back in the day, not so, Peter Cushing. Ok, the 1950's and 60's did have a certain class, no onesies back then. Individuals had dressers and consultants, who would purchase clothing for them, AND dress them.

BUT, NOT MR C. There are some who can wear a hat, 'You have a head for a hat' I've heard people say, or there are men who put on a suit and look a million bucks. Like Peter Cushing. Maybe it was his height, his slim build? He certainly could carry a suit very well. It wasn't always this way.

TRIVIA: PETER CUSHING  was a member of the 'WAISTCOAT CLUB', which was founded in 1953, by actor Jon Pertwee. Above we see Cushing at a Waistcoat Club New Years Eve Party function.

WHEN HIS WIFE HELEN, met Peter for the first time, she though he was a tramp! 'He wore an old velvet cap, with a hole in the crown and was carrying a very heavy old kit bag, like sailors use. A jacket beyond description AND repair. A white shirt, that was spotless, but worn at the cuffs and collar, a pair of once dark corduroy trousers, most of the nap worn away from constant wear and a pair of down-at-heel shoes of grey suede. I was later to find that the shoes had holes in their soles, as large as half crowns. His woolen socks had never known the comfort of a darning needle. BUT I knew I would love him, for the rest of my days...and beyond...' Cushing's attire did certainly improve once he and Helen were married in 1943. Cushing clothing was of enough merit, i think to mention here today. And if you are wondering where this feature will archived? You'll find it in the same file, as 'Christopher Lee's wigs'! It's all good! - Marcus

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY : KELLY SHARES A NEW FIGURE

A NEW MICHAEL RIPPER sculpt is in the works from KELLY GODEL. Premièring here at the Peter Cushing Appreciation Society and and at our FACEBOOK FAN PAGE too! Kelly tells us that, 'The previous Michael Ripper figure was inspired by Ripper's character in Hammer films, Scars of Dracula. This is more of a "Tom Bailey" but without the beard (yet)!

Although Kelly is still working on this figure, I could see this one already had all the signs of being just as excellent as his last Michael Ripper, and I think it will being sought after by figure collectors. I Kelly him how would someone go about ordering one?. 'I don't have any selling plans other than if anyone wants one they message contact me--and there are more to come. I can be contacted at, kgodel@show(dot)ca or they can facebook message me.'

I never really saw Michael very often after he retired. Even though when he was working, he always made time for fans and was, in all this attention, an extremely humble man. He admitted he was a little confused and enormously flattered by the interest that his work with Hammer was now receiving. I once joked and said he might be surprised yet, should they erect a statue of him in honour of his work. He smiled and actually blushed!

During our chatting on facebook today, I mentioned to Kelly that it was great to see this figure was up to his usual excellent standard. And that I was pleased to see he had chosen to make another Michael Ripper figure! Within seconds, Kelly's reply came through on the chat box...it said, 'I haven't forgotten that you said, Michael Ripper would be "over the moon" to have had a statue made of him, so I had to do two!'

Hmm, I think Michael would have liked that..!
