THE MAKING OF A VERY MODERN GENERAL : HOW TO WEAR A COSTUME WITH STYLE

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY! MANY OF YOU have often mentioned Cushing's wonderful ability to ware costumes, like they were his every day wear and wear them SO WELL! The role of General von Spielsdorf in Roy Ward Baker's 'The Vampire Lovers' for Hammer in 1970, gave Cushing the opportunity to play another Vampire Hunter, but unlike his Van Helsing, here Cushing notonly plays the role, he also actually WEARS it! Silk dressing gown, general unforms, high collars and hunting cloaks, few actors wore a costume like Cushing in Hammer movie. Indeed, Christopher Lee looked every inch the Count in his cloaks, but look at both actors in Amicus productions, 'I, Monster'.... Here are few rare colour images of Peter looking his best. Without saying a line, as soon as he appeared on the screen in this movie, you knew Ingrid Pitt's Carmilla had met her match . . in supernaturally and style . . .

PETER CUSHING WAS ONE of those very lucky actors, who could wear a Victorian horses nose-fed bag, and still look very much fitting into the period and quite amazing! This uniform so suits him, and unlike the Tarkin 'slipper-episode' these boots fit him, like a glove

PETER CUSHING and actress Pippa Steel. Pippa would also go on to appear in Hammer films, 'Lust For A Vampire' in 1971. A film that Cushing was also set to appear in. Sadly Helen Cushing's health and passing, prevented him from appearing, and Ralph Bates played a re-written version of the role of Giles Barton . .

A DRAMATIC SHOT in colour transparency of Peter Cushing as General von Spielsdorf on set at Elstree film studios, then called Associated British Picture Studios . .the studio photographer probably spotted Peter, waiting during blocking of a shot, and slipped in to take this shot. It's an amazing pic!

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY MORE COSTUMES SCULPTS AND FIGURES OF PETER CUSHING AND MORE

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY NOW HOW SMART AND STYLISH IS THAT? Now imagine turning up to this year's HALLOWEEN BALL in this costume! VERY smart indeed. But then Cushing's costumes were always very classic and romantic. Problem with this costume though is, you would have to be only about 12 inches tall to get into these togs! These are a custom made costume, made to order by the very clever people at geewhizcustoms.com! Can you GUESS which Peter Cushing film this costume appeared in??? I'm sure you can  . . .

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY REQUESTED a large colour transparency, a behind the scenes shot of Peter Cushing during the making of #STARWARS at Elstree studios, UK in 1976. Later we'll announce the winners of our latest competition, some more #toocoolstuff and hopefully a VERY interesting piece on Tarkin ..later....

I like this figure from STARACE of CHRISTOPHER LEE from Hammer films, THE SCARS OF DRACULA, I very much like they used our title design and feature banner too as their background...but I wish they had spent a little more maybe, on the likeness of Christopher Lee. The costume looks great, and i don't think i have ever come across a figure of DRACULA that SITS before either! Funny isn't it? Even sitting down, he still looks TERRIFYING!

BUT AS FOR RESIN FIGURES, this beautiful figure set from #JEFFYAGER gets my vote! VERY MUCH A #TOOCOOLTUESDAY thing!

DRESSED BY ANGELS EXHIBITION : DRACULA AND SHERLOCK COSTUME ON DISPLAY : LADY GITTE LEE ATTENDS

Dressed By Angels: Here's an exhibition that may interest some of you. Angels have made a trawl through their stock to present a 'best of ' for their exhibition 'Dressed By Angels. Included are Cushing's Sherlock Holmes costume from Hammer's Hound of the Baskervilles' and a replica of Lee's costume from 'Dracula Has Risen From The Grave'. Both look great, plus there's some tv Doctor who costumes too!

The exhibition held it's grand opening on October 1st. The guests included Chairman of Angels Tim Angel, Director Sir Alan Parker, Director and Actor John Landis, Fashion Photographer Tim Walker as well as Lady Gitte Lee, Su Pollard, and June Hudson.

Just one thing puzzles me. Both Baskervilles and Risen were dressed by the company Bermans who actually MADE the costumes too. Angels bought out Bermans in 1992. So, what exactly is the connection between Angels and these and many of the films that were also dressed by Bermans being celebrated here? Also Angels claimed to have found Cushing fur collared overcoat from Dracula a few years ago, a long with David Peel's cloak...no sign of these at the exhibition, two items I would have loved to have seen.

NEWS UPDATE: Peter Cushing's smoking jacket from his 1971 film ,The House That Dripped Blood has now been placed in the forthcoming Bonhams Knightsbridge auction of Entertainment Memorabilia to be held in June, with a very enticing estimate of £1000-1500. It comes complete with the original Phillips 1996 Peter Cushing auction catalogue, certificate from the sale, original lot label (lot 13). Genuine costume and prop items from Cushing's Amicus films are very rarely seen for sale these days. The price, is a give away for anyone considering entering the bidding.
